Have you made some unwise food choices this weekend? Me too! My birthday celebration included treat foods that I don’t normally consume (including cake, ice cream, chips, queso, French fries, and cheeseburgers, oh my)! I indulge on special days just like anyone else. Unfortunately, I always wake up the next day with a nasty “food hangover”; that lethargic, queasy, cranky feeling that comes after stuffing yourself with sugar, fat, and refined carbohydrates. The healthier your diet normally is, the more you’ll feel results of a gastronomic free-for-all. Just like an alcohol-induced hangover, your body needs time to purge itself of unhealthy foods. Fortunately, you can speed this process by drinking lots of water and feeding your body fruits, vegetables, protein, and fiber.
Smoothies are one of the simplest ways to get lots of nutrients into your system. If your stomach is feeling queasy, smoothies are also great because they’re easy on the digestive system (as the food is already partially broken down). Here’s my recipe for a protein-rich smoothie that is sure to speed your recovery. (I’m drinking it as we speak).
P.S. Stay tuned for my next blog, where I’ll discuss my opinion on “cheat days”.
